| ... the 'Flamehugger' ... a precursor to the Sumo |
Our ideas have evolved organically, from tampering with the traditional
'box' configuration of a stove, and by using a mix of intuition and experiment.
one element in the design process that gives us an extra dimension is what we rather grandly call
'shopfloor design' ... this might be as crude as actually sketching out ideas with chalk on the floor of
the workshop (which is how the Firebug came about), or sketching out detail freehand on the steel itself! ... it also involves
any of our craftsmen in any aspect of stove design.
thinking outside 'the Box' ...
has allowed us several advantages:
1. We get the volume where we want it, on the fire base
2. the stove is safer, and easier to load and operate
3. the large surface area makes for faster heat transfer
all our stoves explore this principle, but it is perhaps best illustrated in the Sumo
working purely in steel ...
has allowed us the freedom to experiment with the shapes, but has also imposed on us the discipline
to simplify: detail in steel is labour intensive, so we have come up with unique solutions, such as the bottom hinged door,
and the 'jaw grate'
... no firebricks, baffle plates, fire bars or even rope seals
to ever replace!

Although our designs might appear whimsical as well as unusual, they have
all evolved from practical considerations of efficient combustion, ease of use, longevity, and economy to build

CUSTOM BUILT
Building by hand allows us unique freedom to alter a stove for a
particular situation ... even to build unique one-offs! Awkward shaped openings, double-sided, changing the
boiler-to-space ratio, these are all things we can do. Responding to customers' requirements has been another great engine
for design development.
